A Commonplace Book for Beginners
A minimal system for keeping quotes, ideas, observations, and questions in one useful notebook.
A commonplace book is a personal collection of things worth returning to. It is not a scrapbook of perfect insights and it does not need a clever system to begin.
What to collect
Keep quotes, facts, observations, questions, reading notes, and project fragments that you want to find again.
A minimal index
Leave the first two pages for an index. Add a topic and page number only when you want one. Imperfect indexing beats re-copying.
Notebook options
Any notebook works. A bound book is simple; a loose-leaf format is easier to rearrange. Choose based on how often you expect to move pages.
Most Common Beginner Mistakes
Why it happens: An empty system can feel easier than using a messy one.
Try instead: Start collecting, then make categories from what you actually keep.
